Precepteur puis ministre de Neron, l’empereur tyrannique et sanguinaire, la cause pourrait etre entendue : Seneque paya au prix fort sa trop grande flagornerie et son aveuglement. Son suicide sera son echec. Ce serait oublier et l’homme et l’epoque, ce serait ignorer une uvre exemplaire. Les Lettres a Lucilius, veritable monument de la pensee antique, nous presentent Seneque presque a nu, sans fard, et s’exercant a la sagesse : ” C’est d’ ame qu’il faut changer, non de climat. ” En offrant au lecteur, sans ambages, l’exemple de sa vie, il l’exhorte a une conversion pressante a la philosophie. ” Pas un ne se demande s’il vit bien, mais s’il aura longtemps a vivre. Cependant tout le monde est maitre de bien vivre ; nul, de vivre longtemps ” (Lettre 22, 17).
