Sir John Falstaff, vieux chevalier naif et jovial, desire courtiser Mistress Page et Mistress Ford, deux commeres de la cour de Windsor. Il va pour ce faire envoyer a chacune la meme lettre, se contentant de modifier la signature. Les deux femmes demasquent la manoeuvre de Falstaff, a son insu. Elles decident alors de se jouer de lui. Cette piece a ete ecrite par Shakespeare (1564-1616) en 1602 en moins de deux semaines a la demande de la Reine Elizabeth Ire, qui souhaitait a tout prix voir Falstaff – personnage de Henri IV – amoureux. Baignee dans une atmosphere pastorale et champetre ou se melent farce et feerie, cette comedie de moeurs est l’une des plus legeres et des plus originales de Shakespeare.
