The sabbath is important as a Jewish ‘identity marker’. Lutz Doering investigates sabbath law and practice in Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity from the Elephantine ostraca until the second Jewish revolt. All available sources and traditions for that period pertinent to the issue are analyzed and compared with one another. What emerges is a multiform picture of sabbath law and practice. Not only common traditions and lines of development but also divergent halakhic viewpoints can be recognized. Though the sabbath was shared by virtually all Jews in antiquity, its details were sometimes shaped in different manners.

Lutz Doering richtet seinen Blick auf die Antike und sucht nach Regelungen (‘Halacha’) und konkretem Verhalten (‘Praxis’), die mit dem Sabbat in Zusammenhang stehen. Dabei spannt er den Bogen von den Elephantine-Ostraka (ca. 475 v. Chr.) bis zur folgenreichen Zasur des zweiten judischen Aufstands (132-135 n. Chr.). Er analysiert und vergleicht unter anderem die einschlagigen Abschnitte aus dem Jubilaenbuch und Qumrantexten, Philon und Josephus sowie Belege auf Papyri und Ostraka. Ausserdem zeigt er Grundlinien fruhrabbinischer Sabbathalacha auf. Wie ist im Neuen Testament der Umgang Jesu und der urchristlichen Uberlieferer mit dem Sabbat dargestellt? Welche Auskunfte gibt das Neue Testament uber judische Sabbathalacha?Lutz Doering zeigt, dass Sabbathalacha und -praxis bis zum Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. vielgestaltig sind. Die verschiedenen Segmente des Judentums haben Sabbatvorschriften entwickelt, die uber die sparlichen biblischen Vorgaben weit hinausgehen. Neben Gemeinsamkeiten und Entwicklungslinien kann man auch gegensatzliche halachische Positionen feststellen. Es wird deutlich, dass der Sabbat zwar eine von der Mehrzahl der Juden geteilte Institution ist, aber im einzelnen unterschiedlich realisiert wird. Eine mogliche Realisierung findet sich bei Jesus von Nazaret, der im Horizont eines eschatologischen Sabbatverstandnisses auch an diesem Tag heilt; sein Verzicht auf halachische Absicherung bleibt grundlegend fur den christlichen Umgang mit dem Sabbat.
