English summary: How did Islam survive in the Soviet Union, how did Muslims re-establish Islam in the post-Soviet public sphere? In specific case studies and longitudinal surveys, senior specialists from the area and two German junior scholars analyze the fate of Islamic elites and Sufi brotherhoods, Islamic educational institutions and village courts, as well as the Muslim press, in Tatarstan, Azerbaijan, Daghestan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, from 1917 to the early 2000s.
