English summary: Against a wide chronological and geographical backdrop, extending from the Roman republic to late antiquity and from Romania to Africa via Asia Minor and Italy, the authors of this volume study the religious associations in Roman antiquity and their relationship to Christian communities. They deal with the specific quality of religious associations (collegia), their supporters, members and organizational structures as well as the amount of time invested by their members. They also examine various strategies used to give the association its identity and the competition among the associations on the ‘religious market.’ In the second part of the book, they focus on the lay-out of the rooms in the associations’ buildings (scholae), analyzing the function of the room and the way it was experienced as well as the decorative elements with which the internal hierarchy could be visualized and a sense of community created. German description: Innerhalb eines weitgespannten chronologischen und geographischen Rahmens – von der romischen Republik bis zur Spatantike und von Rumanien uber Kleinasien und Italien bis Afrika – werden in diesem Band die religiosen Vereine der romischen Antike und auch deren Verhaltnis zu christlichen Gemeinschaften untersucht. Die Dokumentation epigraphischer, literarischer und archaologischer Einzelbefunde wird dabei in einen systematischen Fragehorizont gestellt. Zuerst stehen die Trager und Mitglieder sowie die Organisation und soziale Struktur der Vereine im Vordergrund. Gefragt wird nach den spezifischen Charakteristika eines ‘religiosen Vereins’, dem Verhaltnis von privat initiierter Religion zur staatlich organisierten Kultpraxis, der besonderen Bedeutung der Mahlgemeinschaft und dem Zeitrhythmus der Zusammenkunfte. Untersucht werden auch verschiedene Strategien zur Identitatsstiftung, zur Ausbildung einer kollektiven Erinnerung sowie die Konkurrenzsituation innerhalb des vielfaltigen ‘religiosen Marktes’.Anschliessend wird die Gestaltung der Vereinsbauten thematisiert: Es werden Raumfunktion und Raumerfahrung sowie Elemente der dekorativen Ausstattung analysiert, mittels derer die differenzierte interne Hierarchie visualisiert und zugleich das Gemeinschaftsgefuhl einer geschlossenen Gruppe propagiert werden konnte. Daruber hinaus wird die Einbindung der Vereinsbauten in den stadtischen Kontext und die Vernetzung verschiedener Handlungsraume im Alltag untersucht.
