Im Zentrum der funf von Buber ausgewahlten Psalmen steht das vom Menschen immer wieder schmerzlich erfahrene ‘Verhaltnis zwischen dem Rechttun und dem Unrechttun, zwischen den Rechttuenden und den Unrechttuenden auf Erden, damit aber auch die Weltsache zwischen Gut und Bose uberhaupt’. Angesichts der herrschenden Unterdruckung der Wahrheit durch Luge und Tauschung, des Guten durch das Bose, der ‘Schwachen, Gebeugten, Armen und Durftigen’ durch die Machtigen wendet sich der gottgetreue Mensch Hilfe suchend an seinen Herrn. Doch die erhoffte gottliche Intervention bleibt aus, und es wachst die Einsicht: ‘Er ist, aber er ist nicht da.’ Was Buber hier letztlich schildert, ist sozusagen die Umkehrung der Perspektive Hiobs: Nicht, ‘warum es den Guten schlecht’ geht, sondern weshalb die ‘Frevler’ glucklich sind, ist die Frage, die den Glaubigen qualt. Und dennoch verzweifelt er nicht; vielmehr wachst in ihm die Erkenntnis, dass nicht Gott, sondern er selbst sich in seinem Innersten zu wandeln hat, dass Gott der Sprecher, seine Schopfung die Sprache ist, deren sich der Mensch bedienen muss, um Gott im Dialog zu begegnen. Recht und Unrecht erschien 1952 erstmals in der ‘Sammlung Klosterberg’.
