Was ist unter einem Selbst zu verstehen? Die Wissenschaften haben darauf bisher keine abschliessende Antwort gefunden. Und auch die Definitionsversuche psychotherapeutischer Ansatze weichen stark voneinander ab. Wer sich mit dem Selbst auseinandersetzt, hat deshalb auch zu sagen, was er darunter versteht. In der Behandlung schwerer psychischer Storungen kommt der ubliche reflexive bzw. kognitive Zugang rasch an seine Grenzen. Viele psychisch kranke Menschen sind nicht nur von ihren reflexiven Selbstbildern uberfordert, sondern spuren sich auch weniger, sind affektiv herabgestimmt oder empfinden sich als innerlich leer. Sie erleben sich mithin prareflexiv (in leib-seelischer Hinsicht) verandert und behindert. Die Krise des Selbst wird zu einer existentiellen Herausforderung, die auch ein erweitertes Selbstverstandnis erfordert.
