At the turn of the 3rd century, the two most important Neo-platonic Greek philosophers, Porphyry and Iamblichus, contended with each other following an exchange of letters regarding the main question of traditional Greek religiosity. Porphyry wrote the Letter to Anebo, which in reality is an open letter to Iamblichus; Iamblichus responded with Master Anebos Response to Porphyry, known under the name of De Mysteriis. Unfortunately, Porphyrys Letter to Anebo is now lost; significant fragments, however, still remain, which have been revealed by Eusebius of Caesarea and St. Augustin and by Iamblichus Response. The topics covered by these authors are the classification and the attributions of divine beings, the species of divination and theurgy, as a way to unite with god. Thus, it is interesting to put together the fragments of the Letter to Anebo, to translate them and to comment them, and this work, useful in itself, is also a preliminary requirement to a new study of Iamblichus De Mysteriis, which is soon to be published.
