Der Anthropologe Robert Lehmann-Nitsche sammelte 1899-1926 am argentinischen Museum von La Plata schriftliche und mundliche Texte in Mapuzungun, der Sprache der Mapuche. Die Sammlung – heute Teil seines Nachlasses im Ibero-Amerikanischen Institut zu Berlin – umfasst grosstenteils unveroffentlichte Erzahlungen, Geschichten, Lieder, Briefe sowie Fotografien. Ethnografische Praxis im fruhen 20. Jh. ebenso wie die Lebensumstande der Mapuche-Informanten Lehmann-Nitsches werden rekonstruierbar. Der Band macht zweisprachige Versionen von Texten zuganglich, die im fruhen 20. Jh. in Umlauf waren. Sie zeigen die Forschung zu einer indianischen Sprache im Licht der beginnenden Professionalisierung von Linguistik und Anthropologie in Argentinien.
