Die Monografie behandelt die indigenen Sprachen der peruanischen Nordkuste, die vor der Ankunft der Spanier gesprochen wurden. Sie gingen mit dem Untergang der prakolumbischen Gesellschaften der Kustenregion verloren: Sechura und Tallan in Piura, Mochica in Lambayeque und La Libertad, und weiter sudlich Quingnam. Der Autor rekonstruiert die Verbreitung dieser Sprachen bis in die fruhe Kolonialzeit anhand der sparlichen Quellen und diskutiert die Prozesse des Sprachverlustes zugunsten des Spanischen. Soweit moglich werden Lexikon, Grammatik und phonologisches System jeder Sprache dargestellt und mogliche Ruckschlusse auf Sprachkontakte und Sprachgrenzen gezogen. Eine grosse Bedeutung kommt der Diskussion zu, inwieweit die koloniale Sprachsituation an der Nordkuste in die prakolumbianische Vergangenheit projiziert werden kann.
