Italian description: Per alcuni secoli il Monferrato fu un territorio conteso tra le dinastie dei Savoia e dei Gonzaga. La vicenda sembro risolversi nel 1536, quando l’imperatore Carlo V lo assegno alla corte di Mantova. Ma i duchi di Savoia non accettarono la decisione e nel 1613 Carlo Emanuele I, per rivendicare le ragioni dinastiche, scateno una guerra che presto assunse dimensioni europee. Con un’improvvisa quanto efficace campagna militare, il duca si impadroni di quasi tutto il Monferrato, esclusa l’importante cittadella di Casale. Inizio cosi la prima Guerra del Monferrato, combattuta tra il 1613 e il 1617 in cui, soprattutto nella prima fase, tra 1613 e 1615, le truppe del piccolo Stato sabaudo riuscirono a tenere testa al potente esercito spagnolo. Molto meno nota della Seconda Guerra del Monferrato (1627-1630), questa prima crisi monferrina costitui uno dei principali eventi che anticiparono la Guerra dei Trent’anni, che coinvolse l’Europa dal 1618 al 1648. Un gruppo internazionale di storici ha voluto colmare tale lacuna storiografica mettendo in luce, attraverso una copiosa documentazione proveniente dai principali archivi europei, il carattere non solo locale del conflitto. Una guerra che inizialmente vedeva interessati due principati italiani, fini infatti per coinvolgere la Francia, la Spagna, l’Impero, e i piu importanti Stati italiani.
