Plotin introduit dans la tradition platonicienne l’hypothese d’une procession de toute chose depuis l’Un, principe premier absolument simple, puissance illimitee de production et de generation. Cette procession prend la forme doctrinale particuliere d’une succession de trois realites veritables, de trois principes – l’Un, l’Intellect et l’Ame – qui se distiguent successivement sans que chacun quitte celui qui l’a engendre et sans que chacun cesse de produire un rejeton ou encore un effet. C’est de la sorte que, plus de six siecles apres leur redaction, Plotin endente reflechir l’une des difficultes principales des dialogues platoniciens, celle de la participation du sensible a l’intelligible. Le present ouvrage examine les aspects, les moyens et les precedents de cette reflexion neoplatonicienne de l’oeuvre platonicienne en montrant combien le motif de l’imitation y joue un role determinant.
