English summary: The embryo is a plant, which at the moment of birth becomes a susceptible animal through the usage of its intellect. This is the theory supported by this treatise, which was first attributed to Galen and now to Porphyry. This peculiar treatise deals with a problem that has not stopped haunting medical, philosophical, and theological speculations: at which precise moment do we become human beings? The edition is accompanied by a richly annotated original translation. Greek text, French and English translations.
