This study explores the question of miracles in the intellectual and cultural history of the French Enlightenment. Situated between theology and philosophy, miracles take us on an original path though the Enlightenment which neglects neither saints nor pictorial, literary, and theatrical representations of the phenomenon.

Review - French Cette etude propose une exploration de la question du miracle dans l'histoire intellectuelle et culturelle des Lumieres francaises. Elle suit l'evolution d'une notion brusquement mise au devant de la scene avec les convulsionnaires. Eloignes des jansenistes aussi bien que des autorites de l'Eglise soucieuses d'imposer leurs categories theologiques, les philosophes interrogent la notion de facon critique. Entre theologie et philosophie, engouement populaire et preoccupation savante, exaltation et ironie, les miracles invitent a un parcours original des Lumieres qui ne neglige ni ce vehicule privilegie que constituent les saints, ni les representations picturales, litteraires voire theatrales, du phenomene.
