Music invaded the space of the novel in the eighteenth century, notably in novels interspersed with songs in which sheet music was integrated into the very heart of the text. This musical presence is worth considering in its entirety. It is surely one of the most novel features of Enlightenment fiction.

Review - French La musique, au XVIIIsiecle, envahit l'espace litteraire du roman. La presence musicale s'inscrit a travers la scene de musique, definie comme telle par Cazotte. Dans le roman mele de chansons, le texte, assorti d'indications de melodies ou de partitions, invite le lecteur a accompagner sa lecture par le chant et par l'execution de pieces musicales. De nombreux romans du XVIIIsiecle contiennent une reflexion poussee sur la musique, centree souvent autour de la notion classique de l'effet. Cette presence continue et complexe de la musique dans le roman tout au long de ce siecle meritait d'etre consideree dans son ensemble. Il s'agit, sans doute, d'une des grandes nouveautes du roman des Lumieres.
