This work takes as its starting point Charles Batteux’s interpretation of Aristotelian mimesis as an imitation of belle nature. It establishes an intrinsic connection between belle nature and what may be called the epochal moment—that is, a historical moment characterized by a certain suspension or transition—while deliberately moving away from traditional “histories of garden art.” Under the influence of so-called “garden art,” landscape comes to oppose the very idea of a garden in favor of a generalized, limitless landscape.
