La Tragedie de Sophonisbe de John Marston (1575-1634) est la premiere oeuvre anglaise inspiree par l’heroine carthaginoise. L’histoire de Sophonisbe, princesse carthaginoise qui se suicida pour echapper a la servitude romaine, quittant ainsi celui qu’elle aimait, a ete portee a la scene par un grand nombre de dramaturges europeens des temps modernes (dont Mairet et Corneille). La gravite de la version de Marston (publiee a Londres en 1666), rappelle Seneque et les tragedies regulieres ecrites dans l’Europe de la fin du XVIe siecle. Ce texte, tant prise par T. S. Eliot, est traduit pour la premiere fois en francais.
