Longtemps reste presque inconnu des historiens, le livre du chapitre de Saint-Emilion trouve enfin, gryce a Francoise Laine qui l’a soigneusement etudie, decrit, analyse et edite avec la collaboration de Frederic Boutoulle et de Jean-Loup Lemaitre, la place qu’il merite dans la documentation ecclesiastique medievale du Sud-Ouest de la France. Cette nouvelle publication s’inscrit, de maniere logique, dans un important courant de travaux consacres aux principaux etablissements religieux de Bordeaux et de son diocese au Moyen Age, d’ou se degage progressivement un tableau coherent des structures ecclesiastiques et de la vie chretienne dans cette region a l’epoque medievale. Mais il y a plus, car le livre du chapitre de Saint-Emilion (ms. G 902 des archives departementales de la Gironde) est, a divers egards, un document exceptionnel. Il s’agit d’un manuscrit de 171 folios, remontant au debut du XIIe siecle, constamment complete et utilise jusqu’a la fin du XIIIeau prix d’ajouts incessants dans les marges et entre les lignes, ce qui lui donne une apparence souvent confuse et en rendait l’usage delicat, aussi bien pour les chanoines medievaux qui s’en servaient a l’office que pour l’historien qui cherche aujourd’hui a en comprendre la structure et a en dechiffrer le contenu. Le fac-simile en couleurs qui figure a la fin du present volume permettra au lecteur d’en juger par lui-meme.
