by L. Schlaefli
Written in 1518 by Sister Ursula Stingelin, the obituary (Seelbuch) of the penitents of Sainte-Madeleine de Strasbourg, a community founded in 1222, is one of the rare obituaries of women’s communities preserved. It was written in one stroke from an ancient obituary, now lost, and was used until the early years of the 19th century. While the old, copied entries of the obituary concern mainly sisters and some brothers, the entries of the 15th and 16th centuries are mostly about the benefactors of the community, describing foundations and legacies. Most of the records from the 15th and 16th centuries, and all those that follow, are dated, which also makes this obituary a valuable document for the study of Strasbourg society. The last peculiarity of this obituary, apart from the liturgical calendar which serves as its support, is that it is written entirely in Middle High German and Alsatian.
