La Conversion du Kartli est le plus ancien ecrit d’historiographie georgienne. Il a ete redige en trois etapes. Vers 484, le diacre Grigol retrace l’ascese et la predication de sainte Nino, apotre de la Georgie. Au debut du VIIe siecle, la creation de cette nouvelle chretiente s’insere dans les plans de la Providence et de l’histoire universelle : Alexandre fonde le royaume, Constantin le christianise et Heraclius le libere de l’influence zoroastrienne. A la fin du IXe siecle, quand les Georgiens s’emancipent du califat, le texte s’enrichit de vignettes hagiographiques, soulignant le cas singulier de Nino, femme et apotre, captive etrangere, recluse dans un buisson de ronces, qui devient conseillere du roi et de sa cour. Les deux manuscrits decouverts en 1991, a Sainte-Catherine du Sinai, dans un tombeau de livres saints, renouvellent la lecture de cette venerable chronique rescapee de l’usure des siecles.
