Der 38. Band der Reihe “Ausstellungskataloge der Archaologischen Staatssammlung” behandelt eine kleine, aber lehrreiche Kollektion von Textilien mit gestickten Ziermustern oder Purpurwirkereien aus dem spatantik-koptischen und byzantinisch-islamischen Agypten. Diese kleine Kollektion gelangte im letzten Drittel des vergangenen Jahrhunderts in den Besitz des Museums. Wie das Gros des erhaltenen Bestands an koptischen Textilien, die heute vor allem in den Magazinen der offentlichen Museen verwahrt werden, stammt auch der hier vorgelegte Sammlungsbestand aus dem Kunsthandel, d.h. aus undokumentierten Grabungen des 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhunderts. Diese bedauerliche Tatsache, aber auch die forschungsbedingte Luckenhaftigkeit und Seltenheit solch gut erhaltenen Fundguts aus gesicherten Fundzusammenhangen, illustrieren andererseits jedoch hinreichend unsere noch immer unzureichende Kenntnis all jener Kulturerscheinungen, die unter dem Begriff “koptisch” subsumiert werden. Denn viele kulturhistorische Fragen beantworten diese Textilien unabhangig von ihrem archaologischen Kontext allein durch Material, Form, Herstellungstechnik und Dekor.
