Joining Greek tradition was seeked by the sculptors who produced the marble reliefs dealt with in this study: reliefs which are held in the manner of Greek classical votive reliefs. But in fact they are no productions of the fifth or fourth century B.C., but classicist creations, dating of the late Roman Republican or imperial period. The artist’s aim was not to copy the classical prototypes. They were understood as source of inspiration. The results were creations of obviously ecclectic character basing on the reception of pictorial compositions and typology of Greek relief art. There are many features in common with other categories of Roman decorative art. Nevertheless the function of the classicist votive reliefs was not purely decorative.
