Mit dem dritten Band der Gottinger Vorlesungen liegt Karl Barths fruheste Dogmatik – die erste Vorstufe seines Hauptwerks Die Kirchliche Dogmatik – geschlossen vor. Es handelt sich aber um wesentlich mehr als nur um eine Vorstufe: Da Barths spatere Dogmatiken beide nicht vollendet wurden, findet sich hier die einzige vollstandige Darstellung des gesamten dogmatischen Lehrstoffes aus seiner Feder – einschliesslich der Eschatologie!. Der Band enthalt die Lehre von der Versohnung, deren Kernstuck, die Christologie, so viel Raum einnahm, dass Barth das Schlusskapitel mit der Lehre von der Erlosung auf das Wintersemester 1925/26 verschieben musste. Nach Munster berufen, trug er dieses dort einstundig vor, es ist als Nachtrag im Band enthalten. Der Titel – eine wortliche Ubersetzung von Calvins Institutio christianae religionis – verdankt sich dem Verbot seiner lutherischen Fakultatskollegen, einfach Dogmatik ohne den Zusatz reformiert anzuzeigen. Diese konfessionalistische Einschrankung aber wollte Barth seinerseits nicht. So las er eben Unterricht in der christlichen Religion a Hans-Anton Drewes, Dr. theol., Jahrgang 1946, ist Leiter des Karl-Barth-Archivs in Basel.
