Der Kommentar versucht, das Buch Josua in dem Rahmen zu verstehen, fur den es in seiner kanonischen Gestalt geschrieben wurde: Tora und Propheten. Josua ist das Ergebnis von politischen und theologischen Kontroversen um die Auslegung der Tora und das Verhaltnis Israels zu seinem Gott und zu seinem Land, die vom ausgehenden 7. bis zum Anfang des 4. Jh. v. Chr. in Jerusalem gefuhrt wurden. Das Buch dokumentiert die Diskussion, aus der es entstand, und lasst Positionen in ihrer Gegensatzlichkeit stehen. Darum sind die Spannungen und Widerspruche des Textes mitzulesen, nicht wegzuerklaren. Bibelwissenschaftliche Theorien zur Entstehung des Buches hingegen sind kein Selbstzweck und werden nur in dem Masse angefuhrt, in dem sie zum Verstandnis des vorliegenden Textes beitragen.
