Cassiodorus embodies the political and religious changes of late antiquity like few other personalities. As a high-ranking official at the court of Theodoric, he helped shape politics in Gothic Italy. During the Gothic Wars, while in exile in Constantinople, he wrote an extensive commentary on the Psalms that has received little attention from historical research to date. Gerda Heydemann examines it with the aim of considering Cassiodorus’ work as a politician and exegete together. She analyzes his treatment of biblical Israel as a model of identification for Christian communities; his perspective on ethnicity and the position of the gentes in a Christian political order; his position on Arianism and the three-chapter controversy. The result is a fascinating insight into the efforts of a contemporary to understand the late antique period of upheaval in a new and forward-looking way.
