Cet ouvrage, qui s’inscrit dans la serie des Inscriptiones Daciae Romanae mise en oeuvre en 1975 par l’Academie de Roumanie, rassemble 724 inscriptions en provenance d’Apulum, le plus important centre militaire de la province de Dacie, siege du camp de la XIIIe legion Gemina. Cas unique a travers tout le monde romain, deux villes devaient voir le jour dans le voisinage du camp de legionnaires: l’une a partir d’un vicus qui sera eleve sous Marc Aurele au rang de municipe (municipium Aurelium Apulense) et sous Commode a celui de colonie (colonia Aurelia Apulensis); l’autre trouvant son origine dans un ensemble de canabae auquel Septime Severe octroya le statut de municipe (municipium Septimium Apulense). Quant a l’extraordinaire epanouissement economique d’Apulum, la richesse de la vallee du Mures, axe de la province, mais aussi le voisinage des mines d’or – qui valut a la colonie d’Apulum l’epithete de Chrysopolis – l’expliquent a l’envi. Avec les Inscriptions d’Apulum, nous sommes plonges dans la vie quotidienne des militaires et des veterans, mais nous disposons egalement d’un point de vue privilegie sur les institutions politiques propres aux canabae et aux deux villes elles-memes. Au vu de la diversite des noms de divinites attestees, nous decouvrons que leur population etait cosmopolite et originaire de toutes les parties de l’Empire. Un aspect social apparaOEt lui aussi en pleine lumiere: l’essor des chevaliers romains issus de l’armee ou enrichis par l’affermage des domaines du fisc imperial. Ainsi peut-on affirmer que les Inscriptions d’Apulum loin de constituer un corpus parmi d’autres, constituent bel et bien un instrument indispensable pour qui veut connaitre la societe romaine en profondeur.
