English summary: The court system of the late medieval city appears mysterious in many respects. Despite lively construction activity, the courts mostly met outdoors; although the municipalities employed an elaborate scribal system early on, the proceedings usually took place verbally; and although the council often appointed graduate lawyers as court scribes, only laymen judged at its courts. This volume attempts to make plausible these and other phenomena by tracing them back to the underlying distinction between belonging and non-affiliation. Extensive source material from the city of Cologne, which was still available at the time the study was written, serves as the empirical foundation.
