This study examines the syntactic and lexical devices used to achieve the arrangement of information preferred in spontaneous language. On a quantitative level, the limitation of sub-clauses to a new referent as described in Du Bois’ ‘Preferred Argument Structure’, which also does not usually appear as a subject in transitive clauses, is confirmed and specified for the German language. On a qualitative level, the study shows the different functions of high-frequency, semantically non-specific verbs (e.g. “haben” as in ‘have’ and “machen” as in ‘do’) for the introduction and further use of referents. On a theoretical level, the possibility of the integration of discourse-pragmatic trends into linguistic knowledge is discussed against the background of application-based approaches such as constructional grammar. German text.
