The second part of the series “In kaiserlichem Auftrag” has the subheading “Archeological Studies of the DAE in Tigray / Ethiopia”. In more than 25 articles, authors will discuss “Ethiopia mirrored in historic maps” (F. Haubold) and “Ethiopia 100 years ago” (Asfa-Wossen Asserate), the historic environment of Tigray (W. Schmidt) as well as Northern Tigray and Eritrea with reference to photos taken in those days (A. Ritler and L. Latt) (part 1). About the DAE the sequel of the Littmann diary (R. Vogt) is included among other things, D. Phillotson discusses the achievements of the DAE and H. v. Lubke, following archival research, presents new insights into the “inner life” of the expedition, accompanied by notes by St. Wenig (part 2). The third part, on archaeology and history, occupies a large part of the volume. Following an introduction by P. Henze, R. Fattovich and J. Phillips sum up the archaeological research in Tigray since the DAE, while other authors give an account of recent research in the region. In the forth part, material such as inscriptions, coins, and other small findings are evaluated. A third, concluding volume, which will focus mainly on the ethnological research of the DAE and the churches and monasteries in Aksum, Adwa and Debre Damo it visited, is being prepared.

Haubold) und uber “Athiopien vor 100 Jahren” (Asfa-Wossen Asserate), uber die historische Landschaft Tigrays (W. Smidt) sowie uber Nordtigray und Eritrea anhand der damals angefertigten Fotografien (A. Ritler und L. Latt) referieren (Teil 1). Zur DAE wird u. a. die Fortsetzung des Littmann’schen Tagebuches (R. Voigt) geboten, D. Phillipson bespricht die Leistungen der DAE und H. v. Lupke legt nach Archivrecherchen neue Erkenntnisse zum “Innen leben” der Expedition, erganzt durch Anmerkungen von St. Wenig, vor (Teil 2). Der dritte Teil zur Archaologie und Geschichte nimmt einen breiten Raum ein. Nach einer Einfuhrung durch P. Henze resumieren R. Fattovich und J. Phillips die archaologische Forschung in Tigray seit der DAE, wahrend andere Autoren neue Forschungen in Tigray vorstellen. Im vierten Teil werden Materialien wie Inschriften, Munzen, Kleinfunde und anderes besprochen. Ein dritter abschliessender Band, der sich vornehmlich den ethnologischen Forschungen der DAE und den von ihr besuchten Kirchen und Klostern in Aksum, Adwa und Debre Damo widmet, ist in Arbeit.
