Inspire par les demarches iconologiques d’Hubert Damisch, Ruth Mellinkoff et Meyer Schapiro, cet ouvrage propose une somme de documents artistiques et discursifs qui soumettent l’homme Moise (Freud) et son histoire a de multiples eclairages. Il interroge en premier lieu ce qu’a pu etre pour les artistes modernes le repertoire iconographique inspire du prophete dont la loi prohibe toute forme de representation, et dont l’historicite demeure problematique. Etudiant des oeuvres de Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Philippe de Champaigne, Charles Le Brun, Laurent de La Hyre, Jean Cousin l’Ancien et le Jeune, Sebastien Bourdon, notamment, il tache de cerner les particularites de leurs reinventions de l’histoire de Moise et analyse leur aptitude a reformuler la doctrine de l’ut pictura poesis. Il met aussi en evidence les usages de cette iconographie pour les fideles et les puissants. Ce sont donc la faculte interpretative des representations et fictions modernes, mais aussi l’imaginaire qu’elles construisent qui sont examines dans ces pages.
