Die beiden auf den Gottesdienst bezogenen Teildisziplinen der Praktischen Theologie werden in dem Lehrbuch erstmals zusammen dargestellt. Dazu werden sie auf dem Stand der aktuellen Fachdiskussion so weit wie moglich miteinander verschrankt. Das Gesprach mit der katholischen Liturgiewissenschaft spielt in diesem Zusammenhang eine besondere Rolle. Das Lehrbuch basiert auf der Grundeinsicht, dass der evangelische Gottesdienst als die Mitteilung und Darstellung des Evangeliums in ritueller und rhetorischer Form aufzufassen ist. Michael Meyer-Blanck geht vom Sonntagsgottesdienst als dem Normalfall aus und beschreibt nach einem grundlegenden Teil die liturgischen und homiletischen Gesichtspunkte in sechs unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, so dass sich insgesamt sieben Kapitel ergeben: 1. Prolegomena zur Gottesdienstlehre; Gottesdienstlehre in 2. systematischer, 3. historischer, 4. empirischer, 5. okumenisch vergleichender, 6. asthetischer und 7. handlungsleitender Perspektive. Auf diese Weise wird der Erkenntnis Rechnung getragen, dass die Praktische Theologie in Verbindung mit den historischen und systematischen Disziplinen der Theologie steht, aber ihre Gegenstande ebenso in der Auseinandersetzung mit psychologischen, soziologischen und asthetischen Betrachtungsweisen zu klaren hat. Gerade beim Gottesdienst als einem komplexen Kunstwerk mit gestalterischen und musikalischen Gesichtspunkten ist diese mehrperspektivische Betrachtungsweise von Vorteil.
