If God is not a metaphysical supplement to the world, the question arises as to how one has to think about God in order to be truly referring to God. Hartmut von Sass deals with this question by elaborating on three claims: God’s being is identical with God’s acting; this acting towards us is constituted by God’s revelation for us; and finally this revelatory action amounts to a new understanding of ourselves and the world. Combining these three claims leads to relocating God’s works and thus God Himself. There is no separate referent that has been added to the world, but an irreducible reference to the world which surrounds us. This transformation from thinking in substances to an understanding in performances might be called a modalization of faith. The consequences of this theological upheaval for a post-metaphysical conception of God are worked out in a dialogue with hermeneutical theology and its philosophical foundations. German text.
Wenn Gott keine metaphysische Erganzung der Welt ist, stellt sich die Frage, wie Gott dann gedacht werden muss, damit wahrhaft von Gott die Rede ist? Hartmut von Sass beantwortet diese Frage, indem er drei Thesen ausarbeitet: dass Gottes Wesen identisch ist mit seinem Handeln; dass dieses Handeln an uns in seiner Offenbarung fur uns besteht; und dass dieses offenbarende Handeln in ein neues Selbst- und Weltverstandnis des Menschen mundet. Kombiniert man diese drei Thesen, ist Gottes Wirken und damit Gott selbst neu zu verorten: Nicht um einen zur Welt addierten Referenten geht es, sondern um eine irreduzible Referenz auf die uns umgebende Welt. Diese Umstellung vom Denken in Substanzen zum Verstehen in Vollzugen wird als Modalisierung des Glaubens bezeichnet. Den entsprechenden Konsequenzen fur einen postmetaphysischen Gottesbegriff geht der Autor im Gesprach mit der Hermeneutischen Theologie und ihren philosophischen Grundlagen nach.
