This anthology, edited by Achim Aurnhammer and Rainer Stillers, contains definitive studies which go back to a seminar on this topic held at the Herzog August Library in October 2011. The papers address Boccaccio’s twofold influence – both as a narrator and as a humanist. Alongside the author’s effect on Italian and other European literature (especially German, French, Spanish and English) his influence on the visual arts and music is discussed. The interdisciplinary approach allows for works and aspects of Boccaccio’s legacy that have so far been neglected in research to be taken into account. This volume therefore provides important new perspectives on current and future international and interdisciplinary research on Boccaccio. German text.
English summary: Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was one of the fathers of European Renaissance. By making accessible motifs, forms and genres of medieval and ancient narration for a new understanding of literature and a new image of man, he strongly influenced the development of Latin and vernacular humanism far beyond the borders of Italy. The European reception of Boccaccio in the late Middle Ages and in Early Modern Age was formed by his innovative synthesis and transformation of courtly and urban traditions of narration, placing the individual at the center of attention.
