Jahrhunderts
By (author) S. Böntert
In the mid-19th century, European Christians refocused their attention on the biblical sites and began to make pilgrimages to these places in increasing numbers. Also in the German speaking world, such journeys became vivid manifestations of piety and its expression in ritual and liturgy along the way. While the travelers in part followed historical tradition, they also added their own more contemporary interpretation. This interplay affected the form and appearance of worship and customs and gave them a character which was highly subjective on the one hand, but which also re-interpreted long cultivated codes in a new way. The rise of tourism, nationalism, and the tensions resulting from encounters with foreign cultures are just some of the issues covered in this volume. The study evaluates the travelogues, diaries and letters of pilgrims, thus developing an approach that so far has hardly ever been made available to the research of liturgical history.
