Freiheit in Grenzen
Protestantismus in der DDR
by Veronika Albrecht-Birkner
In the quarter of a century since the end of the GDR, much has been written about Protestantism in the GDR. Quite different assessments have been made. They range from very positive appraisals, particularly with regard to the role played in the peaceful revolution of 1989, to the accusation of total adaptation to the GDR state. The proximity in time to the historical events implies that various former actors still are involved in the interpretation of history. The volume provides a short clear overview of the phases of development and the central themes of Protestantism in the GDR, including the history of reception. It explores the structural and theological characteristics which unfolded within the outer and ideological limits set by the GDR state, and in resistance to it, under the signature of freedom.
