In a wide historical framework, the present volume discusses the legal and social roles and positions of women in ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and the surrounding Greco-Roman world. Sources investigated are documentary texts from Egypt and the Judaean desert, selected writings from the Dead Sea and texts from the Hellenistic-Jewish, early Christian, and Rabbinic traditions. The essays discuss issues of the liturgical function of women, their legal position with regard to marriage and property, piety and purity issues as well as the problems of daily life, but also narrative images, role models and clichés. The combination of historical source analysis and the approaches of gender studies leads to a more precise perception of the construction of those images and patterns and their effects in the various ancient cultures.
Der vorliegende Sammelband thematisiert in einem weiten historischen Rahmen die rechtliche und soziale Stellung und Rolle von Frauen im antiken Judentum, im fruhen Christentum und in der griechisch-romischen Welt. Herangezogen werden dokumentarische Texte aus Agypten und der Judaischen Wuste, ausgewahlte Texte vom Toten Meer sowie Zeugnisse aus der judisch-hellenistischen, fruhchristlichen und rabbinischen Uberlieferung. Thematisiert werden Fragen der liturgischen und gottesdienstlichen Funktion von Frauen, ihre rechtliche Stellung im Blick auf Ehe und Besitz, Frauenfrommigkeit und Reinheitspraxis, konkrete Probleme des Alltagslebens, aber auch narrative Rollenbilder und Typisierungen. Die enge Verknupfung historischer Quellenarbeit mit Ansatzen der Genderforschung dient dabei der praziseren Wahrnehmung der Konstruktion von Frauenbildern und ihrer Wirksamkeit in den verschiedenen antiken Kontexten.
