Forschungen im Vicus Ost von Mautern-Favianis
Die Grabungen der Jahre 1997-1999
by Stefan Groh and Helga Sedlmayer
This volume presents an interdisciplinary study of the large-scale excavations conducted by the Austrian Archaeological Institute from 1997 to 1999 in Mautern (Lower Austria), a vicus of the Roman Favianis. Evaluation of the archaeological evidence has given us the first clear picture of the sequence of building and the material culture of a vicus in Noricum, from the early stages of the establishment of a fort to its function during the late antique period. Within the framework of the entire excavation, also through data based on contributions drawn from related disciplines such as epigraphy, archaeo-botany and archaeo-zoology, a broad picture may be made of the socio-cultural and economic patterns of the inhabitants of the vicus of Mautern, which were constantly being modified due to migration as well as the changing basic conditions through three centuries.
