Les assauts repetes des discours theoriques sur le poetique n’ont pas pris la forteresse. Car il n’y a pas de forteresse. Contre l’illusion positiviste de l’approche linguistique autant que contre le discours de l’ineffable, il faut tenir qu’il n’existe nulle formule du poetique qui definirait l’essence d’un genre. Et pour cela ramener dans l’espace protege du poetique l’histoire, la fluctuance des esthetiques, l’appropriation ideologique ; non pour en finir avec la poesie, mais a l’inverse, pour y reconnaitre la capacite qu’a le langage de deborder indefiniment ses stereotypes. L’analyse des poemes de Mallarme vise a inscrire ici l’un des reperes majeurs a partir desquels se fait aujourd’hui et, a coup sur provisoirement, la reconnaissance du poetique ; elle manifeste comment, singulierement, la poesie moderne travaille son propre stereotype en rompant avec ce qui passait pour sa verite : reevaluer le reel dans la representation.
