L’analyse linguistique antique n’est pas l’amorce de la moderne : c’en est une autre, entierement differente. Chaque detail peut trouver des echos dans les analyses modernes : la tripartition signifiant-signifie-referent de l’Ancien Stoicisme, les interrogations sur la fonction informative de la langue, la conception de la parole comme acte, de la langue comme systeme ou comme corpus, etc. Mais l’interet veritable de ces details ne se situe que dans leur rapport a l’ensemble auquel ils appartiennent. C’est en cela qu’il est simplificateur de ne chercher dans l’Antiquite que des sources de la pensee moderne. L’interet primordial de l’Antiquite est heuristique : il s’agit de decouvrir comment sont constituees d’autres organisations du savoir. L’analyse qui est presentee ici se fonde sur un ensemble de textes theoriques en traduction originale. Les uns sont tres connus, les autres beaucoup moins. Tous sont assez etendus pour restituer a une doctrine ou a une polemique sa reelle densite. La traduction de ces textes permet au lecteur moderne de saisir directement la diversite et la complexite de la pensee linguistique des Anciens.
