L’enfant nat au langage quand il imite le langage d’autrui. Mais cette mimesis s’inscrit dans la filire de l’imitation en gnral, phonique et gestuelle, qu’emprunte l’enfant. Elle peut donner lieu une rversion (l’enfant imitant l’autre est son tour imit par lui et se peroit comme imit). Puis elle est dpasse et remplace par l’invention de symboles et l’laboration d’un langage cratif. La gense du smiotique , au niveau des conduites smiotiques et langagires du trs jeune enfant, est ainsi le point de passage dcisif du biologique au psychique, et du comportement la conscience. S’appuyant sur les recherches les plus rcentes de l’poque, l’auteur a pour premier but d’analyser cette gense. Montrer comment cette analyse elle-mme constitue un support pour l’explication en psychologie du langage chez l’adulte, tel est son second objectif. Enfin, il relie les sciences psychologiques celles du vivant et celles du langage dans un schma pistmologique d’ensemble, qui vise tre clairant pour les lecteurs intresss par la linguistique, la psychologie, la psychanalyse ou la philosophie.
