English summary: The Marduk epic (Enuma Eli) is probably the most significant mythical text of Babylonian culture and tells of the elevation of the god Marduk to absolute ruler over all the gods and the world. Gosta Gabriel provides the first complete and comprehensive interpretation of the text, analyzing it on its own terms. In doing this he distinguishes between the impact of its extra-textual dimension (pragmatics) and its intra-textual composition (structure) and meaning (semantics). Crucial for the understanding of the work are also the definition (mtu) and naming, which are examined in terms of their intra-textual function. A consolidation of the different perspectives concludes the volume in which the text, in both its external and internal impact, reveals itself to be the path and key to a perpetually peaceful world order that is based on and originates in Marduk – Pax Mardukiana.
