Etienne de la Boeties Discourse on Voluntary Servitude is the most important of the sixteenth-century political philosophers works. In this piece, la Boetie asks why people accept servitude under tyrants and thus limit their ability to think, smothering any desire for emancipation. The roots of tyranny, for la Boetie, go as far as threatening the limits of the individual.
