Les religions ont une histoire, qui n’est pas celle de la Bible. Elles trouvent leur origine dans les passions des hommes. De la, on conclut aisement qu’en matiere de religion le culte importe plus que le dogme, que le polytheisme preceda le theisme qui en deriva, et que les maux generes par celui-ci sont pires que ceux causes par celui-la. La question d’une pure religion reste en suspens, sachant qu’aucune religion revelee ne peut invoquer en sa faveur un temoignage assez fort ni aucune religion philosophique se reposer sur une demonstration qui soit certaine.
