Antike – Mittelalter – Renaissance” Im Mai 2017 eroffnet in den Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim die grosse kulturhistorische Ausstellung, die unter dem Titel “Die Papste und die Einheit der lateinischen Welt. Antike – Mittelalter – Renaissance” steht. Zum ersten Mal wird dieses Thema in Deutschland in einer solch umfassenden Weise dargestellt werden. Es wird gezeigt werden, wie aus einer kleinen Glaubensgemeinschaft die christlichen Gemeinden rund um das Mittelmeer entstanden sind, wie sich Rom schon fruh auf die Apostelfursten Petrus und Paulus zuruckfuhrte und daraus den ersten Rang unter den Patriarchalsitzen ableitete. Es wird zu sehen sein, wie in den folgenden Jahrhunderten Schritt um Schritt das Papsttum in den Norden und Westen Europas ausgriff und zum Bezugspunkt und zur zentralen Deutungsmacht heranwuchs. Schliesslich umspannte die Kirche von Rom in einzigartiger Weise das gesamte lateinische Europa und schuf verbindliche Werte und Orientierung. Die Vermittlung antiker Rechtsvorstellungen und antiker Bildung in die europaische Welt erfolgte massgeblich durch die Papste und ihre Mitarbeiter, und seit dem hohen Mittelalter wurde die Kurie in Rom zum obersten europaischen Gerichtshof. Mit der Erneuerung Roms im 15. Jahrhundert ging ein einzigartiger Ausbau einher, die Stadt wurde zum Mittelpunkt europaischer Bau-, Bild- und Skulpturkunst.
