English summary: Good, datable, archeological finds help in the reconstruction of history, as the newly designed, permanent exhibition about the early Middle Ages in the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim shows. Written sources mention the wildness of the people who lived on the right bank of the Rhine in the early medieval period, and the archeological finds reveal their loot from raids and much more. Craft goods from the Baltic region, jewels from India, and ivory from Africa all reached the Neckar region. Grave finds document the services of smiths, bone-carvers, glaziers, and bead makers, of potters, and weavers. Skulls with wounds, weapons, ornaments made from silver and gold, status symbols, cookware and tableware all offer immediate access to the lives people led in the early Middle Ages.
