Alttestamentliche Texte werden meist ohne Rucksicht auf die topographischen Gegebenheiten ausgelegt. Fragen nach der Lokalisierung biblischer Orte werden derzeit kaum von Bibelwissenschaftlern und Archaologen gestellt. Vielmehr beschrankt man sich auf die Beschreibung des textlichen oder archaologischen Befundes, ohne beide Bereiche in einen fruchtbaren Dialog zu bringen. Die Studie von Erasmus Gass behandelt alle Ortsnamen, die im Richterbuch vorkommen, und versteht sich damit als Nachschlagewerk zu weit uber 100 biblischen Ortsnamen.Zunachst wird die etymologische Ableitung des betreffenden Toponyms erortert. Danach werden biblische sowie ausserbiblische Belege aufgefuhrt und Folgerungen fur die topographische Verortung gezogen. Anschliessend werden verschiedene Identifizierungsvorschlage hinsichtlich ihres archaologischen Befundes besprochen.Die erzielten Ergebnisse werden in einem zweiten Schritt synchron und dia-chron ausgewertet. Im synchronen Arbeitsschritt geht es um das topographische Verstandnis des Endredaktors, das freilich auch Verhaltnisse einer spateren Zeit widerspiegeln kann. Im diachronen Arbeitsschritt wird nach kleinsten Einheiten gesucht, die ursprungliche Verhaltnisse bewahrt haben konnten.
