Durch eine phonetisch differenzierte und historisch fundierte Neurekonstruktion der Palatalentwicklung im Indoiranischen lassen sich einige grundsatzliche Probleme des indoiranischen segmentalen Lautwandels einer systemkoharenten Losung zufuhren, darunter die bisher ungeklarte Frage der Spirantisierung von Sequenzen aus Okklusiv und Palatal bzw. Labiovelar (Thorn-Problem), die Ratio der indoiranischen Laryngalvokalisation und das Motiv der Genese der indoarischen Retroflexe. Die dabei gewonnene Gesamtsicht leistet auch einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur sprachgeschichtlichen Einordnung der indoarischen Sprachreste am oberen Euphrat (Mitanni, Mitte 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr.) und der innerhalb des Indoiranischen scheinbar isolierten Gruppe der im Hindukusch beheimateten Nuristan-Sprachen.
