Im ostmitteliranischen Soghdischen gibt es eine Reihe von Wortern, die von Demonstrativstammen abgeleitet werden. Sie werden sowohl als Demonstrativpronomen wie auch als bestimmte Artikel bezeichnet. Ihre Klassifizierung nach Kasus, Genus und Numerus weicht jedoch in grammatischen Beschreibungen und Wortlisten erheblich voneinander ab, was zum einen an der unterschiedlichen Verwendung der Worter in den soghdischen Texten liegt, zum anderen an den voneinander abweichenden orthographischen Konventionen der drei verschiedenen Schriften, in denen das Material uberliefert ist. Antje Wendtlands Monographie enthalt eine Untersuchung des gesamten edierten soghdischen Materials, die Wortformen werden nach morphologischer Gestalt und Schrift unterteilt besprochen. Neben der grammatischen Bestimmung erfolgt eine Darstellung ihrer Verwendung an Beispielen aus unterschiedlichen Texten. Hierbei wird eine Artikeldefinition verwendet, die davon ausgeht, dass in typischen Kontexten entweder Demonstrativa oder Artikel verwendet werden konnen, wahrend in anderen ausschliesslich Artikel vorkommen. Wendtland zeichnet die Entwicklung von Demonstrativpronomen zu Artikeln nach und zeigt dabei, dass diese Entwicklung derjenigen in den westlichen indogermanischen Sprachen entspricht. Die Untersuchung ist somit fur Iranisten, Indogermanisten und Allgemeinsprachwissenschaftler gleichermassen von Interesse.
