Nach dem biblischen Bild der Geschichte Israels gliedert sich die vorstaatliche Zeit in zwei Abschnitte: die Eroberung und Verteilung des Landes (Buch Josua) und die Selbstbehauptung in dem eingenommenen Land gegen die verschiedenen Feinde (Richterbuch). Die Beschreibung beider Epochen ist weitgehend fiktiv, denn die in diesen Buchern aufgenommenen Uberlieferungen sind erst im Verlauf der Konigszeit entstanden. Lediglich mit dem Grundbestand des Deboraliedes in Richter 5 liegt ein au- thentischer Text aus der vorstaatlichen Zeit vor. Demnach haben zehn Stamme im 11. Jahrhundert im Land gesiedelt und sich gegen den Machtanspruch der Kanaaniter behauptet. Nach archaologischen Ergebnissen haben zwar einige kanaanitische Stadte noch im 11. Jahrhundert weiter bestanden; das Land war aber weitgehend von einer neuen Bevolkerung in kleinen Ortschaften dicht besiedelt, wobei die materiale Kultur der Kanaaniter ubernommen wurde.
