English Summary: The center of power and hub of the empire, a ruler’s home and retreat, an employer of hundreds of servants and officials – these are but a few initial associations with the term “palace”. However, a “palace” is more than just the building in which a ruler resides, represents and administers. It represents a significant economic factor and at the same time a finely tuned hierarchical system of secular and spiritual order, to some extent a reflection of society and at the same time a cosmos in its own right; a place for serious politics as well as harem intrigue and succession feuds. Last but not least, the palace also provides a space for science, culture and art – defining style and leading the way in fashion and courtly etiquette. These conference proceedings edited by Dirk Wicke include eighteen contributions from a 2016 colloquium on the phenomenon of Assyrian and Islamic Palaces, as seen from the point of view of archeology and philological history. The topics range from the architectural examination of individual building complexes from the 3rd millennium BC to courtly life in Islamic times. Written by well-known scholars, the volume offers an overview of current research and thus serves an ideal introduction on the topic. Der von Dirk Wicke herausgegebene Tagungsband umfasst achtzehn Beitrage des 2016 abgehaltenen Colloquiums zum Phanomen altorientalischer und islamischer Palaste sowohl aus archaologischer wie auch philologisch-historischer Sichtweise. Die Themen reichen dabei von architektonischen Betrachtungen einzelner Baukomplexe des 3. Jahrtausends v.Chr. bis hin zum Leben am Hof in islamischer Zeit.
